Interview with Claire Poirson on Radio France Inter about the rise in cyber threats targeting business leaders, particularly through deepfakes

Our partner Claire Poirson was invited on @France Inter’s 6:30 a.m. news this Wednesday, July 9, to discuss a growing and alarming trend: the rise in cyber threats targeting corporate executives, particularly through deepfakes (AI-generated images or audio that impersonate someone without their consent).
According to the Digital Executive Protection Report 2025 (@Ponemon Institute):
- Attacks on executives rose from 43% in 2023 to 51% in 2025
- Deepfake identity fraud targeting executives increased from 34% to 41%
Another study by @Sumsub shows a +700% surge in deepfake-related fraud between Q1 2024 and Q1 2025, especially in e-commerce, crypto, and edtech sectors.
A stronger legal framework, but enforcement remains a challenge
In France, several legal tools already exist to address deepfake-related fraud: identity theft, privacy violations, data breaches, defamation, harassment, and GDPR violations.
The SREN law recently amended Article 226-8 of the Penal Code, prohibiting the distribution of AI-generated content without the person’s explicit consent and without clear labeling. A new Article 226-8-1 introduces a specific offense for sexual deepfakes, punishable by up to 3 years in prison and €75,000 in fines.
However, enforcement remains difficult: investigations are slow, perpetrators are often abroad, and technology evolves rapidly.
How to protect yourself?
- Strengthen identity verification (2FA, biometrics, live calls)
- Deploy AI-based detection tools (InVID, Deepware Scanner, Sensity AI)
- Limit the sharing of personal data (photos, videos, voice)
- Raise awareness among teams
- Use “safe words” before any financial transfer
